Three U.S. Regions Outpace Global Natural Gas Producers

The United States continues to dominate global natural gas production, and new data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) underscores just how concentrated that output has become. In 2023, the U.S. produced 104 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas—75% more than Russia, the world’s second-largest producer. By the first half of 2025, that figure climbed to 106 Bcf/d, cementing America’s role as the global leader.
What’s striking is that three U.S. regions alone—Appalachia, Permian, and Haynesville—each produce more natural gas than most entire countries:
Appalachia (Marcellus & Utica shale plays): Averaged 33 Bcf/d, ranking as the second-largest producer worldwide if measured independently.
Permian Basin (Texas & New Mexico): Increased from 21 Bcf/d in 2023 to 25 Bcf/d in 1H2025, placing it fifth globally.
Haynesville (Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas): Produced 15 Bcf/d in 2023, slightly easing to 14 Bcf/d in 1H2025, still ranking eighth worldwide.
Why This Matters
For energy professionals, these figures highlight several key dynamics:
Regional dominance: Appalachia’s consistency, Permian’s growth, and Haynesville’s slight decline show how regional geology and infrastructure shape national output.
Global competitiveness: The fact that U.S. regions individually rival entire countries underscores America’s strategic advantage in energy markets.
Market implications: Concentrated production means regional bottlenecks—like pipeline capacity, regulatory shifts, or weather disruptions—can ripple across global pricing.
Looking Ahead
As winter approaches, these production trends will influence storage levels, price volatility, and LNG export capacity. For stakeholders, the takeaway is clear: regional performance is global performance. Monitoring Appalachia, Permian, and Haynesville isn’t just about U.S. supply—it’s about understanding the balance of global energy markets.
