Texas Leads U.S. Pipeline Expansion as Natural Gas Infrastructure Accelerates

The U.S. natural gas network is entering a new phase of rapid growth, with nearly 45 Bcf/d of new pipeline capacity planned for completion in 2026–2027, according to the latest EIA Natural Gas Pipeline Projects Tracker. More than two‑thirds of this capacity originates in Texas, underscoring the state’s central role in connecting the Permian Basin’s prolific supply to downstream markets and LNG export terminals.

🔹 Texas Takes the Lead

Developers are already constructing 70% of the planned additions (31.6 Bcf/d), with Texas accounting for 66% (29.7 Bcf/d) of total new capacity. Key projects include:

  • Rio Bravo Pipeline Project – 138 miles, 4.5 Bcf/d capacity, delivering feedgas to NextDecade’s Rio Grande LNG terminal, expected online later this year.

  • Blackcomb Pipeline – 365 miles, 2.5 Bcf/d, connecting the Waha Hub to Agua Dulce Hub to relieve bottlenecks by Q3 2026.

  • Hugh Brinson Project – 2.2 Bcf/d expansion from the Permian Basin, with phased service starting Q4 2026 through Q1 2027.

🔹 Regional Momentum Beyond Texas

Louisiana follows with 8.4 Bcf/d of new capacity, led by the Port Arthur Pipeline Louisiana Connector (2.0 Bcf/d) and Pelican Pipeline (coming online 2027). Virginia ranks third, adding 1.6 Bcf/d via Williams’s Southeast Supply Enhancement Project, expanding the Transcontinental Pipeline from Virginia to Alabama.

🔹 Strategic Implications

These expansions will:

  • Debottleneck the Waha Hub, improving flow efficiency and price stability.

  • Enhance LNG feedgas supply, supporting export growth amid global demand.

  • Strengthen regional reliability, benefiting residential, power, and industrial consumers.

As the U.S. energy landscape evolves, Texas’s infrastructure leadership positions it as the cornerstone of North American gas logistics, linking domestic production to international opportunity.
