🌬️ SunZia Wind Project: America’s Largest Wind Farm Begins Operations

After nearly two decades of planning and permitting, the SunZia Wind Project in New Mexico is officially entering commercial operation — marking a milestone in U.S. renewable generation capacity.
⚡ Scale and Impact
Total Capacity: 3,650 MW across 916 turbines — more than three times larger than Alta Wind (1,098 MW) and Great Prairie (1,027 MW).
Location: Spanning three counties (San Miguel, Lincoln, Torrance).
Transmission: Paired with the SunZia Transmission Project — a 550‑mile HVDC line
connecting central New Mexico to south‑central Arizona.
Export Capacity: Of the line’s 3,021 MW capacity, 2,131 MW will be delivered to
Southern California via the Palo Verde Substation.
🌎 Regional Transformation
Before SunZia, New Mexico’s net summer wind capacity totaled 3,997 MW. With SunZia online, the state’s capacity rises to 7,647 MW, making wind responsible for 45 % of New Mexico’s capacity mix, followed by solar (19 %) and natural gas (19 %).
📈 Record Generation
On May 15, 2026, CAISO reported 7,122 MW of hourly wind generation, a 20 % increase over the previous record of 5,922 MW set in 2024.
This record underscores how SunZia is already reshaping regional supply dynamics and reducing California’s dependence on gas‑fired generation.
